AR/VR control scheme
Logitech (Logi) Is known for its’ PC control devices AR and VR marked a paradigm shift. This project pre-dated other single-handed controllers. 2017
Goal
Provide a single-handed new control scheme for an undefined AR operating system.
Design research activities
Establish working assumptions and hypotheses. Prototype and test in 2-week Design Sprints. The sprints covered UX principles, Hero flow storyboarding, Interaction design, Prototyping & testing and a control scheme proposal.
Outcomes
The showcase experience included a graphic UI and Keyboard experience.
Intellectual property. US Patent: INPUT DEVICE FOR VR/AR APPLICATIONS, 2017
5 key scenarios were storyboarded and key assumptions about a new AR environment were mapped out
This sketch illustrates a physical button configuration that as prototype. The individual buttons could be remapped or even omitted as we worked through the interaction design schemes.
Secondary research (Microsoft Hololens guidelines) regarding where flat digital content should be placed. Similar guidelines were applied with respect to how the flat content behaved (body locking etc)
Working board for interaction schemes. I communicated interaction schemes on large foamboards with sketched product interactions. The value of this approach was that we could work in an agile fashion, prototype quick and catch design oversights early.
The project was run in Design Sprints. In general, my role was to define prototypes, test them and make a recommendation at the end of each 2-week Sprint.
Ikea key scenario experience. The ability to select move, place and resize furniture using AR as a retail experience in your living room.
100% blind typing prototype with heavy word prediction algorithm.
Early point and click prototype. Later versions applied word prediction and a revised visual layout. Credit Garry McKee (Design Technologist)
This graphic UI also represented our point of view on how the keyboard would function, cursor behaviours and all the icons and timings and ballistics required to deliver a convincing and intuitive control experience.
